Hex 37 - Gnoll Stronghold

A fortress was built here, on the edge of the Cloud Peaks, by Amn during a previous war with Baldur’s Gate and has long been abandoned. Since then, a clan of gnolls has taken over it.

Biome: Mountains. Strong wind. Steep rocky slopes. Shrubbery clinging to gravel patches. Faraway raven.

Encounter Rules

Generate an encounter the first time the party goes to one of this hex’s features and every 12 hours. Encounters can happen on the way to the location or at the destination. If an encounter would happen while the party rests, good survival skills while setting up camp make the encounter happen after the full rest is completed. Search the Baldur’s Gate Wiki for information on named NPC. Do not hesitate to replace any named NPC by one the players have already met from time to time! It makes for a better story.

Feature A - Rope Bridge

This fragile rope bridge is the only way to cross the Bear River Rapids in this area. That is, if you pay a toll to the two ogres that guard it.

Feature B - Gnoll Stronghold

Many walls of this ruined fortress have collapsed, but it is still an imposing structure. Especially covered in the gruesome demonic idols of the gnoll god.

Feature C - Xvart Caves

If one is to explore the cliffs below the fortress, they might stumble upon a cave network used by a clan of xvarts allied with the gnolls.
