It is immune means it ignores such effects. It resists means it has advantage on its rolls against such effects, or take half damage from it. It is vulnerable means it has disadvantage on its rolls against such effects, or take double damage from it. It can means it can do certain things, or, if it is an abstract skill, that a hard roll is required to beat it. It can’t means it can’t do certain things, or, if it is an abstract skill, that an easy roll is required to beat it. Also is for all other passive effects. However is for all other weaknesses.
Out of combat, the monster can do certain type of magic at the referee’s discretion.
Attacks (2/round) A monster can do a certain number of different attacks per round among the ones listed.
Example Attack. A melee attack means that the target needs to be adjacent. A ranged attack means the target just has to be in range. A melee attack with reach means the attack can hit targets hiding behind others. The number in bracket is the damage die.
Spellcasting. The spells listed are simply descriptive and to be used at the referee’s discretion.
Size
Explanation
tiny (cat and smaller), small (kid), medium (adult), large (horse, ogre), huge (elephant, windmill), gargantuan (whale and bigger)
Hit Dice
Explanation
The number of D6 to roll the monster’s HP. Certain monsters have bonus hit points: 6 +6HP means the monster has 6D6+6 hit points. If you don’t want to roll, simply multiply the Hit Dice by 3 or 4.
Armor Class
Explanation
The amount of damage resisted on each attack by the monster: leather (1), chain (2), plate (3).
Attack and Defense
Explanation
How hard it is to hit or dodge the monster. Normal means you have to beat 15 on your roll, hard, 20, and easy, 10.
Movement
Explanation
How hard it is to outrun the monster. Normal means you have to beat 15 on your roll, fast, 20, and slow, 10.
Random Encounter
Roll if the monster is in the encounter list of a hexcrawl or a dungeon.
- Monster: The number and type of creatures.
- Lair: In a hexcrawl, where the monster (and its treasures) live. There is a 50% chance the monster is currently away.
OR
Omen: In a dungeon, the monster is coming but the players have one round to prepare or escape. - Spoor: Recent trace of the monster. It’s in the area nearby, if the players want, they can easily find it.
- Tracks: If the players decide to follow them, roll a D3 on this list to see where they lead.
- Trace: A sign of the monster’s presence in the ecosystem. A good tracker could use these to find tracks. But otherwise only a clue.
Each monster, depending on its type, has defining features and unique tables that fleshen it for the referee. They are described in each monster type section.
